【Summary】

Background: Tinnitus is a common and complex symptom that significantly impacts the quality of life for patients. Traditional treatment methods often fall short, necessitating the exploration of alternative therapies. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of electroacupuncture in treating tinnitus and to discuss the parameters of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for tinnitus treatment as referenced in the literature. The aim of this paper is to summarize the effects and specific methods of electroacupuncture in treating tinnitus, seeking a consensus on treatment efficacy and optimizing guidelines for electroacupuncture parameters. Methods: A literature search was conducted in the PubMed database covering the period from January 2010 to February 2021, using MeSH terms such as "Electroacupuncture and tinnitus," "Transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation and tinnitus," "Vagus nerve stimulation and tinnitus," and "transcranial direct current stimulation and tinnitus." Full texts related to electrical stimulation and tinnitus treatment were reviewed and included in the discussion. Results: Twenty-two selected articles were analyzed and compiled. Conclusion: Electroacupuncture appears to be a potential alternative therapy for tinnitus treatment. The selection of parameters may benefit from reference to those used in other forms of electrical stimulation. It is hoped that more high-quality studies will be conducted in the future to further explore the optimal usage and therapeutic mechanisms, providing a basis for clinical application.
